Brick Workouts

Brick workouts are an extremely important part of your triathlon training. Often coming off the bike and starting the run in a race your legs might feel like lead. Incorporating at least one brick workout per week will greatly help you make that adjustment. Bricks refer to two disciplines during the same workout, one after the other with little interruption between the two similar to a race. Most people refer to bricks as a bike/run but it can also be swim/run. The swim/run brick is going to help you regain your balance faster coming out of the water. I recently read a great brick used by pro triathlete and Ironman Champion Chris McCormick.

Bike: 40K (25.6miles)
Run: 5K (3.1 miles)
Bike: 40K
Run: 5K
Bike: 40K
Run: 5K

Okay, so I know we all don't have 3+ hours to spend on training. I did it the other night and modified it a bit to fit into a two hour workout.

Bike: 20 minutes
Run: 10 minutes
(4x=2 hours)
This is great because if you only have one hour you can still get a good brick workout!!! You can also modify it to fit you....30 minute bike/15 mile run---4x...Whatever works for you!!!

Same thing with swimming....

Swim: 500 yds
Run: 5K (3.2)
(4x for full workout)

Good luck and remember to get your bricks in!!!

This picture rocks...this guy is killing two birds with one stone!!! Swim and bike...hmm...very interesting!!!
